Your next deal is in your past-client list.

Happier than you think

People who write thank-you letters underestimate how surprised and happy the recipient will be, and overestimate how awkward it will feel, according to research by Amit Kumar and Nicholas Epley in Psychological Science.

Close the deal. Keep the client.

The keys are handed over, the clients are hugging in the driveway, and you’re already late for the next showing. The thank-you you meant to send? Type it on your phone in the car. It’s printed on your own letterhead, with your logo and footer, and mailed for you.

Then send another on the home anniversary. A letter won’t win the referral; your work did that. It just makes sure your name is the one they remember when a friend asks who they used.

Letters agents send.

The closing thank-you

The one they keep with the keys.

The referral thank-you

For the friend who sent you a buyer, whether or not it closed.

The home anniversary

One year in. A check-in that isn’t a pitch.

Just sold, just listed

A real letter to the neighbors, on your letterhead.

The open-house follow-up

For the couple who stayed and asked about schools.

The whole sphere

One letter, every client, each copy personal: $3 a letter, $2.50 from 10 and $2 from 50.

Good to know.

Should real estate agents send thank-you letters after closing?

Yes. Referrals and repeat clients are the core of the business: 43% of home buyers found their agent through a referral, according to the National Association of Realtors’ 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. A thank-you letter after closing is a simple way to stay in touch with the people most likely to send the next one.

When should I send a closing thank-you letter?

Within a week or two of closing, while the move is still fresh. A note on the home anniversary keeps the relationship going after that.

Can I put my logo on the letter?

Yes. Add your logo at the top and up to three footer lines (name, brokerage, phone, license number) at no extra cost.

How much does a thank-you letter cost?

From $3: $3 folded and mailed First-Class, $11 Certified with a tracking number, or from $15 mailed flat in a rigid mailer with a free tracking number. Mailing your whole client list? Mail merge is $3 a letter, $2.50 from 10 and $2 from 50.

Your turn.

Thank your next client on paper.

Write a client letter from $3
